How it works

Execute a high-volume attacking sequence in a game-realistic setting with varying sets and defensive reads.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • full court
  • cones for targets

Your focus

Elite attackers must perform under fatigue while making rapid adjustments to set location, height, and tempo. This drill combines physical conditioning with cognitive load , just like a long match. USA Volleyball IMPACT advocates for high-repetition attacking in training to build both technique and mental resilience under pressure.

1

Setter stands at position 2/3. Passer sends balls to setter from the back row.

2

Attacker runs continuous approaches in position 4 (outside), 2 (right side), and 6 (back row) in rotation.

3

Setter varies the set: high ball, quick set, back set, attacker must adjust approach timing accordingly.

4

Defender (or coach) attempts to dig; attacker aims for open zones on the court.

5

Run for 5 minutes of continuous play, tracking kills vs. errors. Rest 2 minutes and repeat for 3 rounds.

Goal

It's real when you make decisions mid-air about where to hit based on the defense, not pre-decided before you jumped, but read as you go.

Helpful cues

  • Read the set early, start your approach off the setter's hands
  • Stay aggressive, take risks in practice to earn consistency in games
  • Control your arm swing on the line shot, don't over-swing

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Limit to one hitting position; setter delivers the same type of set each time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a full defensive team; score the drill as a mini-game.
