Your focus
Back-row attacks require a longer approach and a precise understanding of the attack line rule. Players must generate maximum jump height from behind the 10-foot line and still produce a sharp downward attack angle. Consistent back-row attacking adds an additional offensive threat that coaches can deploy strategically.
Mark the attack line clearly. Player starts 15-18 feet from the net.
Player runs a four-step approach, ensuring both feet take off from behind the attack line.
Setter delivers a set to the back-row position (zone 6 or 1), higher and deeper than a front-row set.
Player contacts at the peak of the jump, directing the ball crosscourt or down the line.
Complete 12 attacks per set, alternating crosscourt and line shots. Rest 45 seconds between sets.
Goal
You're there when your feet land behind the 10-foot line consistently and your arm still swings fully, legal takeoff and full power together.
Helpful cues
- Both feet must leave the floor behind the line
- Approach at a sharper angle than front row
