How it works
Develop communication and decision-making leadership by assigning a rotating 'point captain' role in doubles practice who calls the strategy before each point.

Your focus
Doubles requires constant communication and tactical leadership; training this explicitly at the beginner level builds habits that translate directly to team tennis. Players who must verbalize strategy develop deeper tactical understanding than those who simply react. The captain role also teaches accountability , owning outcomes builds resilience and maturity.
During doubles practice, designate one player on each team as 'point captain' for a game.
Before each delivery, the point captain must call out the team's strategy (e.g., 'delivers, I poach' or 'both stay back and rally').
Partners execute the called strategy regardless of their personal preference during the game.
After each game, rotate the captain role; debrief which strategies worked and why.
Helpful cues
- Loud enough so your partner hears
- Call it before the serve, not during
- Own the plan, whatever happens
