Your focus
Intermediate players often run through the ball instead of shuffling into position, causing poor balance at contact. This drill isolates the lateral shuffle pattern and links it directly to shot execution, creating automatic court movement. Recovery step practice after each shot prevents the common habit of watching the ball instead of resetting.
Place three cones in a line along the baseline: one at center, one at each singles sideline.
Player starts at center cone; coach feeds to the forehand sideline cone.
Player lateral shuffles to the ball, hits a crosscourt groundstroke, then shuffle-recovers to center before the next feed.
Alternate feeds to forehand and backhand for 10 repetitions per side; focus on shuffle mechanics, not just getting to the ball.
Goal
Success is recovering to the center mark after every shot, if you're always in the right spot before the next ball comes, your footwork is doing its job.
Helpful cues
