Streak Buster Challenge

How it works

Build a positive attitude during losing streaks by practicing a structured between-point routine that refocuses attention on controllable actions.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Young players often spiral after losing consecutive points, so having a rehearsed refocusing routine interrupts that negative momentum. Practicing this routine in training normalizes its use so players apply it automatically under match pressure. The challenge format adds mild competitive stress to make the training transfer to real match scenarios.

1

Coach and player play first-to-seven points with the player starting at 0-4 (in a losing streak simulation).

2

Before each point, player must walk to the end line, bounce the ball three times, and verbally state their intention ('steady rally' or 'attack second serve').

3

After each lost point, player performs their pre-point routine again before continuing, no skipping allowed.

4

If the player wins three consecutive points using the routine, they receive a 'Streak Buster' recognition; if they win all seven from 0-4, they demonstrate mastery.

Helpful cues

  • You can't control the score, only the next point
  • Use your routine to slow down the moment
  • Three bounces = three seconds to reset and refocus

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start the deficit at 0-2 instead of 0-4 to make the comeback more achievable.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a tiebreaker scenario where the player starts at 5-6 down and must demonstrate the routine on every point under maximum pressure.
