Five-Ball Recovery Drill

Agility & Change of Direction

Legend

How it works

Develop rapid recovery footwork and directional change by hitting five consecutive fed balls alternated wide and then to the middle.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court
  • ball hopper

Your focus

Alternating wide balls and recovery balls recreates the rhythm of a competitive rally, forcing players to change direction under pressure. Hitting five in succession builds both cardiovascular conditioning and the mental discipline to reset footwork after each shot. Players learn to split-step on the coach's toss rather than watching the ball flight alone.

1

Player starts at the center baseline mark; coach stands at the net with a full hopper.

2

Coach feeds alternately wide to the deuce side and then directly to the player's forehand, repeating five times.

3

Player must recover to within one step of the center mark before each next feed is released.

4

After five balls, coach evaluates recovery speed; player rests 45 seconds and completes four sets total.

Goal

Success is hitting all five balls cleanly, with your feet already pointed back toward center before each contact, no ball should catch you standing still.

Helpful cues

  • Recover on the angle, not straight back
  • Your first step after contact is your most important step
  • Stay balanced through the shot before you push off to recover

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Feed only three balls per set and give the player a longer recovery window by waiting until they reach center.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Expand the wide feed to the singles sideline and introduce occasional short balls to the service line that require a sprint-and-stop movement.
