How it works
React to a visual signal and sprint to a loose ball faster than an opponent, developing reactive speed.
What you need
- soccer ball
- mini goals
Your focus
Match speed is reactive , players respond to the ball, to opponents, and to signals. Training reactive speed (responding to a visual trigger) rather than pre-planned speed develops the cognitive-physical speed needed in real game situations.
Two players stand side-by-side facing away from a mini goal, 15 yards away.
Coach rolls a ball between them.
On the sound of the ball touching the ground, both players turn and race to the ball.
First player to the ball attacks; other defends.
Play to finish on goal; track wins over 12 rounds.
Vary the starting position: kneeling, arms up, facing sideways.
Goal
Success is winning the race to the loose ball at least 4 out of 6 reps, your reaction to the signal is immediate, not a half-second delayed thought.
Helpful cues
- React to the sound, your body reacts before your brain decides
- Low body position before the signal, ready stance, not upright
- First 3 steps are the race, win them and you win the ball
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Coach calls 'go' instead of reaction to ball bounce, more predictable trigger.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Ball is thrown high, players must read flight and react. No account needed
