How it works

Isolate first-step drive mechanics against a wall to build the explosive hip extension and forward lean required for fast starts.

What you need

  • wall or fence

Your focus

Most young athletes accelerate upright , they pop up immediately and lose the forward lean that creates speed. Wall drives lock the athlete into the correct acceleration angle and let them feel hip drive in isolation, without worrying about the next step. Athletes who spend time here usually show immediate improvement in their standing-start sprints because the motor pattern transfers directly.

1

Athlete stands 2-3 feet from a wall, leans forward, and places both hands flat against it at shoulder height.

2

Body should form a straight diagonal line from heels to head, about 45 degrees.

3

Drive one knee up quickly and powerfully toward the wall, then drive it back down and push the ground away.

4

Alternate legs in a fast, marching rhythm, left, right, left, right.

5

Keep hips level, no rocking side to side.

6

3 sets of 10 drives per leg. Rest 45 seconds between sets.

7

After each set, immediately perform a 10-yard acceleration sprint from a standing start.

Goal

You've got it when the wall drill and the sprint feel like the same movement, same posture, same drive, just one has you moving.

Helpful cues

  • Push the ground back and down, not down and back
  • Stay long through the planted leg when it pushes off
  • Keep your core tight, no sagging hips
  • The ball of the foot hits the ground, not the heel

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Slow, controlled marching tempo, focus on posture, not speed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Alternate legs as fast as possible for 5 seconds, then release into a sprint on the coach's signal.
