How it works
Perform a timed sprint while teammates actively try to distract you verbally, training the ability to focus under social and competitive pressure.
What you need
- cones
Your focus
Crowd noise, trash talk, a coach yelling, a teammate calling your name , these things interrupt athletic focus constantly. Athletes who train in quiet environments often struggle when competition gets loud. This drill recreates that pressure deliberately in practice so athletes learn to narrow their attention, filter out noise, and execute anyway. The skill of selective attention is trainable, and this is one of the most direct ways to train it.
Mark a set distance sprint course with cones.
Athlete gets into sprint position at the start line.
Two or more teammates stand on either side of the course.
On 'Go,' the athlete sprints while teammates clap, yell, call their name, give wrong directions, etc.
Athlete must stay on course and run through the finish at full effort.
After each run, athlete reports what distracted them most, coach debriefs.
Repeat 5 times. Progress by increasing distraction intensity.
Goal
You've got it when your sprint times stay consistent regardless of distraction level, focus, not noise, determines your performance.
Helpful cues
- Pick a focal point at the finish line and lock onto it before you run
- Don't fight the noise, let it happen in the background
- Your job is the finish line, not what anyone else is saying
- Breathe before the start, two seconds of calm before the signal
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Start with no distractors, then add one at a time across sessions.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a decision at the finish line, coach holds up fingers, athlete shouts the number while sprinting. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
