How it works

Sprint to the cone that matches the coach's color call, training reaction time, decision speed, and first-step acceleration simultaneously.

What you need

  • cones (multiple colors)

Your focus

Most speed drills train athletes to go fast on 'go.' This drill trains them to go fast on *the right thing* , which is what sport actually demands. The cognitive layer (color recognition → movement decision → motor output) compresses reaction time and teaches athletes to trust their read. Studies on reactive agility show it transfers more directly to game performance than pre-planned agility patterns.

1

Set up 3-4 colored cones in a semicircle, 5 yards from the athlete.

2

Athlete stands in the center in an athletic stance, eyes on the coach.

3

Coach calls a color, athlete sprints to that cone and touches it.

4

Return to center. 2-second pause. Coach calls the next color.

5

8-10 reps per round. Rest 60 seconds. Complete 3 rounds.

6

Progress: coach shows a color card instead of calling it, visual-only stimulus.

Goal

You've got it when you're moving before you consciously 'decide', the reaction feels automatic, not calculated.

Helpful cues

  • Start with your weight forward, the first step is everything
  • Don't anticipate, wait for the call, then commit fully
  • Sprint to the cone, don't jog, this is a decision AND a speed drill
  • Eyes on coach, not on cones, peripheral vision handles the cones

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Only 2 cones. Slow the call cadence to allow more processing time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a 'wrong color' rule, if coach says 'Red' but holds up 'Blue', go to blue. Splits attention and tests cognitive load.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
