1v1 Contain and Force

Defense

12 minutesintermediateindividualphysical

Legend

  • parent attacker
  • defender
  • cone lane
  • contain route

How it works

Hold defensive position against an attacker trying to dodge, forcing them to a weak side.

What you need

  • cones
  • lacrosse stick

Your focus

Forcing an attacker to the weak side through body position , not stick fouls , is the mark of a disciplined defender. This drill builds the footwork and body angle that makes channeling a habit.

1

Set a 5x10 yard channel with a goal cone at one end.

2

Parent attacks with stick. Defender channels attacker to the right side.

3

No slashing, force with body position and stick angle.

4

8 reps. Track how many times attacker reaches the goal cone.

5

Progress: start with stick just in the way, then actively contest.

Goal

You've got it when you successfully force the attacker to the designated weak side on 6 of 8 reps without fouling.

Helpful cues

  • Overplay the strong side, force them where you want them to go
  • Don't lunge, stay patient, let them make the mistake
  • Stick in the passing lane, body in the running lane

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Parent moves slowly and telegraphs the dodge, focus on correct body angle.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Parent attempts a full-speed dodge, defender must maintain contain without fouling.
