How it works
Develop elite endurance and in-game recovery by simulating all three periods of a game at competitive intensity with full line rotations.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
- goalie
Your focus
True game endurance is only developed by sustaining competitive effort across a full simulated game with realistic shift lengths and rest periods. Players who train this way develop both the physiological capacity and the mental strategies to remain effective in the third period. Elite endurance separates teams in tight games where the margin of physical superiority determines outcomes.
Run a full scrimmage divided into three 8-minute periods with a 2-minute intermission between each.
Lines rotate every 45 seconds of game time to simulate real shift usage.
Coach tracks and announces performance data at each intermission: shot attempts, turnovers, compete level.
Players who show effort degradation in the third period are noted for specific conditioning follow-up.
Goal
You're doing it right when your third-period effort in the scrimmage looks like your first, speed and compete level don't dip.
Helpful cues
- The third period is where conditioning championships are decided
- Your intermission is for water and refocus, not for sitting down mentally
- Effort in the final 2 minutes of each period tells your conditioning story
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Run two 10-minute periods with a longer intermission to reduce total volume.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a conditioning element at the end of each intermission before the next period, building fatigue into the simulation. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
