How it works

Build high-intensity skating endurance by running a sustained power skating block that demands maximum effort across multiple full-ice reps.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

At competitive levels, physical endurance is a differentiating factor in the third period , teams that are better conditioned make better decisions and play faster when others are fading. Power skating endurance training at game-specific intensity builds the capacity to maintain elite skating mechanics even when fatigued. This translates directly to consistency of play through all three periods.

1

Players complete a timed full-ice sequence: sprints, backward skate, crossovers, pivots.

2

Immediately after completion, rest is exactly equal to the time it took to complete the run.

3

Complete 6 reps with no additional rest between the 1:1 work-rest cycles.

4

Coach tracks both time and quality of mechanics across all 6 reps.

Goal

You've got it when your power skating doesn't visibly slow or shorten by the end of the block, same push, same extension.

Helpful cues

  • Mechanics before speed, maintain form as you fatigue
  • Your recovery between reps is as important as the work period
  • The player who is best conditioned has the final say in close games

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce to 4 reps and allow 1.5:1 rest ratio.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Increase to 8 reps and reduce rest ratio to 0.75:1, working harder than you can fully recover from.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
