How it works

Develop neutral zone decision making by reading the defensive structure and choosing the optimal zone entry option under game pressure.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

Zone entry success is one of the highest-leverage decisions in hockey , the choice between carrying the puck in, dumping it, or chipping it directly determines possession in the offensive zone. At a competitive level, reading the defensive setup before the blue line separates players who enter with possession from those who ice the puck. This drill creates hundreds of entry decision reps in a single practice.

1

Three forwards approach the offensive zone from the neutral zone with a puck.

2

Two defenders position at the blue line, their gap, angle, and positioning change each rep on coach's signal.

3

Puck carrier reads the defensive setup and calls the entry option: carry, dump, or chip.

4

Team executes the called entry; coach evaluates read accuracy and execution.

Goal

You've got it when you choose the zone entry option that creates possession, not the one that gets the puck picked off.

Helpful cues

  • Read before the red line, not at the blue line
  • Tight gap means dump; wide gap means carry
  • Call it early so your linemates are already skating the right lane

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Defenders hold a stationary position for 5 reps so reads are clear before randomizing their position.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a neutral zone forechecker trailing from behind, creating a third pressure element that affects the carry option.
