How it works
Develop elite 2-on-1 decision making by reading the defender's position and goalie's angle to choose between shooting and passing in real time.

Your focus
The 2-on-1 is hockey's highest-leverage scoring situation, and poor decisions on it squander the advantage. Elite players read the defender's commitment and the goalie's position simultaneously to determine whether the shot or the pass gives the better scoring chance. This drill creates focused, deliberate reps of the most valuable offensive read in the game.
Two forwards enter the zone on a 2-on-1; one defender protects the middle.
Puck carrier reads the defender: if defender commits to the carrier, pass; if defender holds position, shoot.
Rep ends with a shot on net; goalie plays live.
Post-rep debrief: coach explains what the defender did and whether the correct decision was made, separate from whether it went in.

You're doing it right when your 2-on-1 reads feel automatic, shoot when the defender commits to the pass, pass when they back off.
Helpful cues
- Read the defender's weight, are they leaning toward you?
- If you are shooting, pick your spot before you release
- The right decision is not always the one that scores, evaluate the read, not the outcome
