How it works
Train defensive pairs to verbally communicate zone coverage assignments during a defensive zone drill.

Your focus
In the defensive zone, silent coverage leads to missed assignments, two players chasing the same attacker, and open scoring chances. Verbalizing coverage , 'I've got the net,' 'my assignment left post,' 'Help on the weak side' , ensures every player knows their role without confusion. Communication as a habit, not an afterthought, is the foundation of reliable defensive zone play.
Set up a 3-on-2 in the defensive zone.
Before the ball is dropped, each defender must verbally call their initial coverage assignment.
During play, defenders must call out any coverage switches or threats ('left post!' 'back door!' 'switch!').
If a coverage call is missed and the coach catches it, play stops and the moment is discussed.
