How it works

Develop proper gap control and the timing of a legal, effective body check in a controlled one-on-one drill.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Poorly timed body checks lead to penalties, missed hits, and poor defensive position. Training gap control , maintaining the correct distance and angle to force a decision , combined with proper hit timing develops physically assertive yet disciplined defenders. Elite defenders are dangerous because they choose the right moment, not because they hit everything that moves.

1

Puck carrier starts at the far blue line; defender starts at the neutral zone with a 5-foot gap.

2

Puck carrier drives wide down the wing; defender skates backward to maintain a 2-skate-length gap.

3

When the puck carrier crosses the near blue line, the defender can close and attempt a shoulder-to-chest body check in the legal zone.

4

Rotate after each rep; debrief on timing and angle.

Goal

You've got it when your gap is tight enough to make contact the moment they try to accelerate past you, not too early, not too late.

Helpful cues

  • Maintain your gap, don't charge early
  • Hit shoulder-to-chest, eliminate the gap straight through
  • Stay on your feet through the hit

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Defender practices only the gap skate without making contact, focus on positioning

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second puck carrier trailing as an option, forcing the defender to read pass-or-drive before committing to the check
