How it works

Assess and develop elite all-around athletic performance by combining speed, power, agility, and endurance in a single timed full-ice circuit.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • timer
  • ice

Your focus

Top-level hockey requires simultaneous expression of multiple athletic qualities rather than isolated skills. Full-ice combine drills mirror the physiological demands of a complete shift and expose weaknesses in the athlete's overall profile. Repeated exposure to this type of total-demand training accelerates athletic development more effectively than single-quality drills.

1

Course: start at goal line → full-ice sprint to far goal line → backward skate to center → tight cone weave (6 cones) back to original end → figure-8 around both nets → full-ice sprint to finish at far blue line.

2

Player carries a puck the entire course.

3

Player takes a shot on net after the figure-8 before the final sprint.

4

Coach records total time; players complete 3 timed trials with 2-minute rests.

Goal

You've got it when every component of the combine, speed, agility, power, and endurance, posts your personal best time in the same session.

Helpful cues

  • Pace the backward skate, conserve for the final sprint
  • Stay aggressive through the weave, don't slow down into cones
  • Your shot must be on net or the rep doesn't count

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Split the course into two halves and time each separately

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a defender who begins pursuit at the figure-8 stage, creating chase pressure for the final sprint
