How it works

Build lower body explosive power through short burst start races that directly mirror the flag football snap-and-go first step.

What you need

  • cones

Your focus

Explosive starting power in flag football is the physical attribute most directly linked to route separation and defensive pursuit. Short burst start training builds the fast-twitch fiber activation that produces the explosive first step. Competitive race format motivates maximum power output on every rep.

1

Two players start side by side in an athletic crouch; a cone is placed 10 yards away.

2

On a hand signal (to prevent reaction time from start sound), both players explode to the cone.

3

Winner is declared; both players acknowledge and reset. Run 8 race reps per pair.

4

Track whether the faster starter consistently wins or if second-step power compensates for a slower first step.

Goal

You're there when your start race wins through explosion off the line, not head start or longer legs, but better first step.

Helpful cues

  • Power comes from the legs, not the lean
  • Drive your back knee forward on the first step
  • Accelerate through the cone, do not ease up at the finish

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use an auditory cue rather than visual for easier reaction.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a cut at the 5-yard mark before finishing through the 10-yard cone.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
