How it works
Develop the body control to catch a contested pass in tight coverage while maintaining balance and securing the ball before a flag pull.

Your focus
Contested catches in flag football require receivers to coordinate the catch process (hands and eyes) with defensive awareness (protecting the flags after the catch). A receiver who loses body control during a catch cannot protect their flags and convert the play. Body control in contested situations is one of the highest-value skills in advanced flag football.
QB throws a moderately high-difficulty ball to a receiver who has a defender in close coverage.
Receiver focuses on coordinating the catch sequence: track the ball, extend hands early, secure before thinking about the flag.
After securing the catch, receiver immediately tucks the ball and identifies their flag-protection position.
Run 8 contested catch reps; grade both the catch quality and the body control through the entire sequence.
Goal
You've got it when you secure the contested catch with both hands and get two feet down, in bounds, ball controlled, flags intact.
Helpful cues
- Catch first, flags second, but do both in one second
- High-point the ball, don't let it come to you at chest level
- Body control is what makes a catch into a play
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce defender to arm's length, no real flag pull attempt, so receiver can focus purely on catching mechanics.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a second defensive player who attacks the flags immediately after the catch is made.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
