How it works
Develop match-level speed and acceleration by completing repeated full-speed transition sprints that replicate the demands of elite field hockey.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- goals
Your focus
Elite field hockey requires multiple maximum-effort sprints across a full game with short recovery windows. Training at match speed develops the speed endurance needed to maintain acceleration in the final minutes. Players who can sprint as fast at minute 60 as minute 1 have a decisive advantage.
Player sprints 40 yards with ball from defensive end, shoots on goal, immediately sprints back 40 yards.
Rest 20 seconds.
Complete 6 repetitions without reducing sprint quality.
Coach times each rep; acceptable degradation is less than 0.3 seconds per rep.
Goal
You're doing it right when your transition sprints stay fast all the way through the session, last rep looks like the first.
Helpful cues
- Back sprint is as fast as the forward sprint
- This is match speed, not 90%
- The last rep is the most important one, don't drop
