How it works
Build game-specific endurance by performing high-intensity rondo intervals with structured recovery periods.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
Game-specific endurance training is more transferable than generic running. The rondo format keeps players aerobically stressed while practicing skill. Structured recovery between rondo sets trains the body to recover quickly, as it must during game substitutions or stoppages.
5v2 rondo on a 15x15-yard grid; run for 3 minutes at full intensity.
90-second active recovery (light dribbling).
Repeat for 4 full sets.
Track heart rate if monitors available; aim for 85%+ during work, 65% during rest.
Goal
Success is maintaining full game-speed rondo effort through all intervals, not surviving, actually competing.
Helpful cues
- Intensity in the work period, recovery is earned
- Active recovery means moving, not sitting
- Endurance is built in the hard moments, not the easy ones
