How it works
Develop communication within a defensive unit by requiring constant verbal organization of shape against an attacking team.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
- pinnies
Your focus
Defensive communication is one of the most critical and underdeveloped areas in youth field hockey. When defenders verbalize shape, pressure, and cover responsibilities, they are more coordinated and harder to break down. Practice in a controlled grid transfers to full-game defensive organization.
Set up a 25x20-yard grid; 4 defenders vs 3 attackers.
Defenders must communicate continuously: who has pressure, who has cover, who has the weak side.
Every time communication drops (coach or teammate notices silence), the attackers get a bonus touch.
Run 4-minute bouts; rotate attackers and defenders.
Helpful cues
- Communicate before the ball arrives, not after
- Name the player you're marking, every time
- Silence costs a touch, stay loud
