Your focus
Uncontested layup practice does not prepare players for real game finishing, where a defender is always present. Players who train contested finishing learn to shield the ball, adjust trajectory, and use body control to score despite contact. This drill closes the gap between practice finishing and game finishing.
Ball handler attacks from the wing. Defender starts at the elbow and steps over to contest at the rim.
Ball handler must finish the layup using one of: euro step, power move, or reverse, whatever reads best against the contest.
Defender provides 50% challenge, enough to force an adjustment but not block every attempt.
10 reps each side. Rotate at 75% intensity after first 10.
Goal
Success is finishing cleanly with the defender contesting at least 3 out of 5 reps, not avoiding contact, going through it and scoring.
Helpful cues
- Read the defender: are they in front or beside? That determines your finish
- Protect the ball with your outside hip and shoulder
- Score through the contest, don't avoid contact if you have position
