How it works
Learn a short, controlled downward check on a stationary ball placed on a cone.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
Your focus
Practicing the check on a still target builds a short, controlled downward motion before adding a moving opponent. In girls lacrosse at this age, a check is only legal as a downward motion when the opponent's stick is below the shoulders.
Place a ball on top of a cone at waist height.
Player stands two stick-lengths away in a defensive stance.
Player brings the stick head straight down onto the ball in a short, controlled motion, knocking it off the cone. No jabbing forward.
Reset and repeat 10 times with each hand.
Goal
You've got it when the check comes straight down onto the ball, short and controlled, with your head up.
Helpful cues
- Short and controlled, straight down
- Keep your feet still when you check
- Check down and away from the body, never toward it
